What is the Story of Vasubaras
The festival of Vasubaras is also associated with mythology. According to the Puranas, when the gods, together with the demon, churned the ocean, Kamadhenu appeared with 14 gems. Kamadhenu is a divine cow that fulfills all kinds of desires. The gods gave the Kamadhenu a place in heaven. The daughter of Kamadhenu was named Nandini. The Nandini cow was kept in his ashram by Rishi Vashishtha.
The Nandini cow fulfilled all the needs of Rishi Vashishtha. Even all the items used in the sacrifice were provided by the Nandini cow. That is why the cow is considered the source of wealth and happiness on earth, and to honor its importance, the ritual of celebrating Govats Dwadashi Tithi was kept.
It is said that once a king who was childless wandered to the ashram of sage Vashishtha and prayed to Vashishtha Krishi. Rishi Vashishtha told the king that if he wanted to have children, he should worship the Nandini cow and do this on the day of Dwadashi before the date of Dhanteras.
The king worshiped the Nandini cow on the twelfth day and observed the fast with rituals and devotion, and after a few years, a son, Ratna, was born in the king’s house. That is why the ritual of worshiping all the cow mothers and their words in the form of the Nandini cow is said to be on Govats Dwadashi. It is said that if childless persons worship Gau Mata on this day, they will surely get children.
