What is the Importance of Narali Purnima

Narali Purnima is very important for the fishermen community and people living in the coastal area. The word Narali is used for coconut in the Marathi language. There is a tradition of offering coconuts to the sea on the day of Nariyal Purnima, which is done to please Lord Varuna and get his blessings during the fishing season.

According to ancient religious beliefs, when the fierceness of the sea trapped the fishermen in a terrible storm, they prayed to Lord Varuna. Then Lord Varuna came and calmed the sea. Since that time, it has become a tradition for fishermen to offer coconuts to the sea on this day as a mark of respect and gratitude. It is said that by worshiping the sea on this day, fishermen get plenty of fish. Also, they remain safe from the calamities of the sea.

Apart from this, Nariyal Purnima is also related to Lord Shiva because the three eyes of the coconut are considered to be the symbol of Lord Shankar. This festival is also an opportunity to show gratitude and respect to nature.  Fishermen take their boats out into the sea as the sea winds and directions become favourable for fishing after the monsoon.

Nariyal Purnima Puja Vidhi

Nariyal Purnima Puja is very simple. This puja can be done at home as well as on the beach. Let’s know the Nariyal Purnima Puja Vidhi

Morning bath and cleaning– Get up early in the morning, clean yourself, and wear clean clothes. It is very important to take care of mental and physical purity in this puja. Cleanse your home’s place of worship by sprinkling it with Gangajal to purify the surroundings and invite positive energy.

Collect Puja Materials– Bring coconut, flowers, fruits, incense, lamp, kumkum, turmeric, sandalwood, akshat, panchamrit, dry fruits, and sweets as materials for Nariyal Puja. Also, bring a pot filled with water and a banana leaf for worship.

Setting Up the Puja Area – Cover a wooden platform with a red or yellow cloth, and place idols or images of Lord Varun, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Lakshmi upon it to begin the worship rituals. Now wrap a coconut in a yellow cloth and decorate it on banana leaves.

Do the Puja in this way– Light a ghee lamp and incense stick at the place of worship and chant these mantras while meditating on Lord Varuna and Shiva (Narali Purnima Mantra)–

• Varuna Dev Mantra- Om Vam Varunaya Namah
• Shiva Mantra- Om Namah Shivaya
• Lakshmi Mantra- Om Shrimhree Shrinkamalekamalalaye Praseed Praseed Shrimhree Shrimmahalakshmyanaamah

Afterward, mark the coconut with a tilak using kumkum, turmeric, and sandalwood paste as part of the ritual offering. Then offer flowers, rice, and sweets on it. Anoint Lord Varuna with water and Panchamrit.

Method of worship on the beach– If you are worshiping on the beach, then keep the coconut facing the sea and do the ritual fast worship. Next, offer the coconut to the sea, praying to Lord Varuna for the safety of fishermen and an abundant catch. Conclude the ritual by lighting incense and a lamp, and offering arghya (sacred water) to the sea. After the puja, do the Aarti of Lord Varuna and Shiva and distribute the Prasad among your relatives, friends, and the needy.

Fasting and Food– On the day of Narali Purnima, a fruit fast is observed in which coconut dishes like Narali Bhaat and coconut sweets are consumed as food.
