On this day, women observe a waterless fast for their husbands’ long life and a happy married life, and worship Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Ganesha, and Karwa Mata. How to Perform Karwa Chauth Puja at Home Alone?

Proper preparation for the Karwa Chauth puja is essential. With all the necessary materials, you can perform this puja with devotion and faith in these steps:

First Step: Shringaar

  • Before the puja, perform the sixteen adornments. This includes filling your hairline with sindoor or vermillion, applying mehendi, bindi, kajal, bangles, and mehendi, etc.
  • Wear your wedding dress. If a new dress is not available, you can wear any other clothes.

Step Two: Preparing the Worship Site

  • Spread a yellow or red cloth on a platform. You can also use an old, clean cloth.
  • Install a picture or idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the platform.
  • Place idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, or symbols made of betel nut and turmeric. If silver idols are available, you can also use them.
  • Make a flower seat or a rice seat below all the deities.

Step Three: Preparing the karwa and kalash

  • Take two clay pots, the right one for you and the left for Goddess Parvati. Place the spouts of the pots towards the deity and insert a kusha stick into them.
  • Take a pot and make a rice seat beneath it. Sprinkle turmeric on the pot. Place a coin, betel leaf, turmeric, betel nut, and a flower in it.  Apply a vermillion tilak to the lid of the Kalash and place mango leaves and rice or wheat inside.
  • Fill your Kalash with water, and fill Mata Parvati’s Kalash with sugar, dry fruits, wheat, flattened rice, and other items according to your family’s customs. Cover it and place rice, wheat, and a sweet on top.
  • Place Dakshina on the Kalash and offer a coconut to the Goddess.
  • Offer garlands of flowers to Karwa Mata and Lord Shiva.
  • Light a ghee or oil lamp and place it on the pedestal. Place a small lamp on top of the Kalash.
  • Place incense sticks, sweets, fruits, and wedding items such as a saree, blouse, bindi, vermillion, bangles, etc.

Fourth Step: Karwa Chauth Puja

Invocation:

  • Taking Akshat (rice flour) and invoking all the gods and goddesses.
  • Make a resolution that this fast and puja will be completed without any obstacles and that your husband will live a long life.

Tilak:

  • Apply a vermillion tilak to Karwa Mata, Parvati, and Lord Ganesha.
  • Apply sandalwood tilak to Lord Shiva.
  • Also, apply a tilak to the storybook.

Janeu and worship:

  • Offer the sacred thread to Lord Ganesha.
  • Light incense sticks and show them to all the deities.
  • Offer sweets and fruits.
  • Offer Suhaag items to the Mother Goddess. If Suhaag items are not available, you can offer only vermillion and a bindi.

  • After offering the offering, perform Achamana.
  • Stand and perform Aarti for Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.

Method for Performing the Karwa Chauth Alone

Performing the Karwa Chauth is an important ritual on Karwa Chauth. If you are performing the puja alone, perform the Karwa Charan as follows:

  • Take your Karwa and Goddess Parvati’s Karwa in your hands.
  • Cross your hands and rotate the right Karwa to the left and the left Karwa to the right seven times.
  • Perform this process with care and devotion.

Moon Worship and Arghya

After performing the Karwa Charan, the ritual of offering Aarti to the Moon is performed, which is done as follows:

  • When the Moon is visible in the sky, place your Arghya (water) before the Moon.
  • Next, look at your husband through a sieve (if your husband is not present, consider his picture or remember him in your mind).
  • Offer Arghya to the Moon with your Karwa. Slowly pour water towards the Moon and pray.

  • Donate the contents of Goddess Parvati’s Karwa (sugar, dry fruits, etc.) to a married woman or consume it yourself.
  • Eat a light and sattvik meal to break the fast.
