How to Worship Yamraj on Yama Dwitiya

  • On Yama Dwitiya, bathe early in the morning and wear clean clothes.
  • Then, create a small altar facing south.
  • Create symbolic idols of Yamraj and Chitragupta from clay at this location.
  • Light a ghee lamp here, then first remember Lord Ganesha.
  • After this, invoke Yamdev with the following mantra: Om Yamaya Namah, Om Dharma Rajaya Namah, Om Sha Shravanay Namah.
  • Now, offer rice, sandalwood, and unbroken rice grains on this altar.
  • Also worship Chitragupta on this day, as he is considered the keeper of the accounts of karma. 
  • After performing the morning prayers, light a lamp facing south at the main entrance of your house at sunset on Yama Dwitiya. This is called Yamadeep.
  • Light this lamp with sesame oil and use a cotton wick. This pleases Yamaraj and removes the fear of untimely death and accidents.

Yamaraj Beej Mantra

Om Yamaya Namah

While lighting a lamp facing south at sunset on Yama Dwitiya, be sure to chant the Yamaraj Beej Mantra, which pleases Yamaraj, and then offer sesame seeds and jaggery. This mantra bestows blessings of long life, mental stability, and freedom from accidents.

Dharmaraj Stotra

Om Dharma Rajaay namah.

yamaay dharmaraajaay mrtyave ch antakaay ch.

vaivasvataay kaalaay sarvabhootakshayaay ch.

audumbaraay dandaay neelaay paramaay ch.

vaivasvataay shaantaay sarvalokanamaskrtaay.”

While lighting a lamp in the south direction in the evening, recite this stotra once and after that chant the Beej Mantra of Yamraj.  This source removes the brother of untimely death and eliminates the effects of sin.

om chitraguptaay namah.

namaste dharmaraajasy sachivaay namostu te.

lekhaakaaraay satyaay chitraguptaay te namah.”

Yamdeep Stuti (Special mantra for lighting Yamdeep)

Mrtyunaapaharaamyaham deepanan yamadeepakan.

ten deepen me mrtyuh na bhooyaat grhamev ch.”

Be sure to chant this mantra while lighting the Yama Deepa. When lighting the lamp facing south, chant this mantra three times with concentration. Afterward, offer some sesame seeds and water in front of the lamp burning with sesame oil. This pleases Lord Yama.
