Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat 2025
Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat is observed on the eleventh day of the Shukla Paksha during the month of Ashadh. This Ekadashi falls when the Sun enters Gemini. By observing all Ekadashi fasts, one gets freedom from all sins, while observing Devshayani Ekadashi fast fulfills all the wishes of the devotee. As per the scriptures, Lord Vishnu defeated the demon Shankhasur on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadh. From this day onward, He enters a four-month period of rest in Kshir Sagar. This sacred Ekadashi also marks the commencement of Chaturmas. Therefore, no auspicious work like marriage, etc., is performed in these four months.
After 4 months, when the Sun enters Libra, Devuthani Ekadashi comes. Lord Vishnu awakens from His divine slumber on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, a day celebrated as Devuthani Ekadashi. The time between these two dates is considered to be Chaturmas. Apart from this, the story of the origin of Devshayani Ekadashi is referred to in the Puranas, which is related to the demon king Bali and the Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
According to this, when God in the form of Vaman asked King Bali for three steps of land, he measured the earth and the sky in his first step and the netherworld in his second step. When there was no land left for the third step, King Bali surrendered himself.
God was pleased with this sacrifice of King Bali and made him the ruler of the netherworld and asked him to ask for a boon. After that, King Bali requested a boon from the Lord, asking Him to reside in his palace forever. Seeing God getting bound in this way, Goddess Lakshmi made King Bali her brother and asked him to free God from his promise.
Then from this day onwards, following the boon given by Lord Vishnu, the three main gods reside in the netherworld for four months each. According to this belief, Lord Brahma rests from Mahashivratri to Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu enters slumber from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi, and Lord Shiva sleeps from Devuthani Ekadashi until the following Mahashivratri.

Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The legend of Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat is not only deeply significant but also incredibly captivating. Brahma Ji narrated this story to Narad Ji when he expressed curiosity to know about the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi. Let us now explore the fascinating story behind the Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat-
In Satyuga, there was a Chakravarti king named Mandhata in whose kingdom the people lived very happily. However, times took a drastic turn, and a severe drought struck the kingdom. There was no rain in that kingdom for 3 years and crisis and poverty spread throughout the kingdom.
The people of the kingdom left their religion and started lamenting and one day they all reached the king. Seeing the condition of the people, the king became very sad and started thinking about what sin I had committed for which I and my people are getting punished.
Thinking this, he went towards the forest to find a solution to this problem. Wandering in the forest, Brahma Ji’s son reached Rishi Angira. The sage welcomed him and asked the reason for his coming there. Then the king folded his hands and said, Mahatma, I have followed the religion with full dedication in my whole life, yet there is a terrible drought in my kingdom. Why did this happen? Please tell me a solution for it.

On hearing the king, sage Angira said, Satya Yuga is the greatest of all the Yugas. In this, even a small sin is punished badly. According to the scriptures, no caste other than the Brahmin has the right to do penance, whereas in your kingdom, a Shudra person is doing penance. This is the very reason behind the lack of rainfall in your kingdom. The famine will persist until that individual is put to death.
On hearing this, the king said, O sage, my mind is not ready to accept that I kill an innocent person. Please tell me some other way. Sage Angira then advised the king to observe a fast on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Ashadh month, assuring him that doing so would surely bring rain to his kingdom.
After hearing this, the king went back to his kingdom and, together with people from all castes, faithfully observed the Padmanabha Ekadashi fast, performing all the prescribed rites and rituals. As a result, there was very good rainfall in his kingdom and his kingdom once again became rich with wealth and prosperity.
